The Maxillary Sinus Grafting and Survival Rate of Implants : A 10-year Retrospective Study

|
Maxillary sinus augmentation is used for implant placement in edentulous maxilla with alveolar bone resorption. It has relatively few complications and a high success rate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognosis for various conditions after maxillary sinus grafting to improve insufficiency of remaining bone when placing implants in posterior maxilla over the last 10 years. We analyzed 1,121 implants in 404 patients who underwent maxillary sinus grafting and implantation during the last 10 years at Chosun University Dental Hospital. Statistically speaking, the implant survival rates did not differ significantly according to systemic disease and bone quality, implant type and surface treatment, graft materials, surgery stage or type of membrane. In contrast, residual bone height, approach technique and Schneiderian membrane perforation were associated with significant differences in implant survival. Overall, however, implants generally survived well. This study suggested that maxillary sinus grafting is a safe procedure.
